Abstract: Antibacteria potential of extracts from fresh and dried Tagetes minuta plant was investigated against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by using disc diffusion method. Extracts from both dried and fresh plant materials was prepared using two different solvent such as distilled water and methanol. The efficacy of crude extract was compared to that of standard antibiotic penicillin. The Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from row milk and was identified by biochemical test and Escherichia coli was isolated from patient’s sample at Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kigali (CHUK). The susceptibility of tested bacteria to the extracts was obtained by measuring the diameter of zones provided by growth inhibition of bacteria inoculated on nutrient agar plates.  The solid and liquid extracts obtained were later prepared into different concentration. The results revealed that the methanol extracts has higher inhibitory effects on both bacteria while the fresh and dried extracts showed less effect on both bacteria. The most susceptible bacteria in this study were Staphylococcus aureus than Escherichia coli. The extracts from dried plant showed more antibacterial activity than that from fresh plants and the standard antibiotic showed greater inhibition zone than that of plant extracts. This study has confirmed and justified the use of Tagetes minuta plants amongst the people especially those in rural communities where the practice has become prevalent owing to easy accessibility to the plant and relatively low cost of herbal preparation.

Abstract: From January-march 2014, blood samples from 350 HIV/AIDS patients who are attending clinic in sokoto state specialist and Usmanu Danfodiyo university teaching hospital, sokoto were examined for malaria parasite. Both thin and thick films were made and stained using Giemsa staining technique. Of the 350 samples examined, 159 (45.4%) had Plasmodium parasites. Only Plasmodium falciparum (96.9%) and Plasmodium malariae (3.1%) were seen. The study showed that age group of 21-30 years had the highest prevalence rate of 64 (40.0%) while the least prevalence rate was found among age group 11-20 years. Females had the higher prevalence rate of 103 (64.2%) and males had lower prevalence rate of 57(35.8%). With regard to marital status the result showed that married had the higher prevalence rate of 97 (61.0%) while lower prevalence rate of 62 (39.0%) was recorded in single. There was no significant difference of malaria parasite infection among age group (p=0.818), sexes (p=0.392) and marital status (p=0.287) of the HIV patients.  The need to improve the quality of health care, malaria prevention and treatment given to HIV/AIDS patients attending clinic is recommended.

Abstract:  When one buys commercial cleaning products, one expect them to do one thing: Clean! There are a wide variety of soaps, detergents, bleaching agents, softeners, polishes, and specialized cleaners for bathrooms, glass, drains, and ovens that keep our homes clean and pleasant-smelling. The chemicals in these cleaners foam, bleach, and disinfect our dishes, laundry, bathrooms and countertops. Alongside, they also contribute to indoor air pollution, are poisonous if ingested, and can be harmful if inhaled or touched. In fact, some cleaners are among the most toxic products found in the home. A few safe, simple ingredients like soap, water, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice and a coarse sponge for scrubbing can take care of most household cleaning needs. And this can help save lots of money wasted on unnecessary, specialized cleaners! For this reason, a recipe for Do-It-Yourself cleaners has also been shared.
However, if one needs the convenience or the added power of  commercial cleaning products, or there is a need for the basics like laundry and dishwashing detergents, there are some guidelines to help one choose products with the lowest impact on one’s health and the environment.

Abstract: Adsorbent treatment of distillery effluent has great potential as a sustainable method as it is a low cost method. The aim of this investigation is to study the adsorbent treatment method for purification of distillery spent wash. For this, the study encompassing evaluation of reduction of various physico chemical parameters (pH, COD, TS, TDS, Ca, Mg, Na and K) of distillery spent wash in response to treatment by using activated charcoal, fly ash and wood ash was performed. Treatment efficiency of used adsorbents against distillery spent wash was checked by passing through the adsorbent column. The distillery effluent was acidic ( pH 4.7) and brownish yellow in color which often cause psychological fear in farmers for utilization as irrigation water. It has a high value of COD ( 3989 mg/ml),TS ( 4800 mg/ml) which is greater than its  value. Activated charcoal treatment of 50% spent wash exhibited maximum reduction in COD, TS, TDS, Mg, Na, Ca and increase in pH toward pH 7.Treated spent wash showed a good growth of wheat seeds.

Abstract: Cytotoxic and antitumor activities of ethyl acetate extract of leaves of Phyllanthus acidus were studied. The extract showed significant in vitro cytotoxic activity against Hep G2 and DLA cell lines. IC 50 value of Hep G2 cell line was 11µg/ml and for DLA cell line was 75µg/ml. the antitumor activity of the extract was determined by using DLA cell line induced solid tumor model in Swiss albino mice and its comparison with anticancer drug cyclophosphamide. There was significant reduction of tumor volume in P. acidus treated animals. Percentage reduction of in tumor volume after 30 days was 45.75% at lower concentration of 200mg/kg and 76.66% at 400mg/kg drug concentration.

Abstract: Current therapeutic treatment for convulsion is associated with a wild variety of side effects. The folkloric uses of plant to health care can indicate an important source of new pharmaceuticals. In the present study, the antiepileptic activity of Sarcostigma kleinii was evaluated against electrically chemically induced seizures. The seizures were induced in mice by maximal electric shock, picrotoxin and isoniazid models. All drugs were administered orally 1hr prior to induction of seizures. The study duration was 7 days. The antiepileptic activity of Sarcostigma kleinii was compared with the standard anticonvulsive agents phenytoin and diazepam. The data was analysed by one way ANOVA followed by Dunnett’s test.

Abstract: Cultivation of Andrographis paniculata under three different treatments i.e Farmyard manure, biocom post, and Vermicompost with respect to control was carried out at the three nurseries of Forest Department located at different altitudes (elevation) in Tehri Garhwal.  Investigation has been done to find out the suitability of different treatments on the basis of different growth parameters. Data was recorded for height and diameter of shoot. Results concluded that vermicompost was most effective.

Abstract: In India chemical degradation of land is very fast causing pollution and decreasing  agricultural production. Increasing use of chemical fertilizers is a major threat to environment. Soil needs some natural alternative having rich microbial activity.Vermicomposting is the best alternative .in this research soil with vermicompost is compared with soil from chemical fertilizers based farms. It is found that, vermicompost soil has more diverse bacterial and fungal species which can degrade vast variety of organic waste into simpler soil nutrients. Vermicompost soil is finely divided, peat like soil with high porosity, aeration and water holding capacity. It can improve soil texture, fertility and microbial activity. It can be the best ecofriendly alternative of chemical fertilizers.

Abstract: Phenol and its component are majorly toxic to the environment. It is hazardous when exposed to the organisms surface.Since Phenolic components are excessively sprinkled in nature,organisms including human beings are more exposed.The aim of the study deals with the collection of sample from Palakkad and  analyse the ability of bacteria,which has the potential to degrade the hazardous Phenolic compounds .Majorly Pseudomonas species are found to be having the capability to degrade the Phenolic compounds and their derivatives.In this burgeoning population the soil is major factor which is having major contact to phenol and other toxic chemicals by chemigation etc. So the bacteria which has potential degrading ability from soil is identified.
