Abstract: A common practice of keeping Domestic cats (Felis catus) as companions is observed in urban as well as rural areas of Gujarat. Chlamydophila felis, a bacterium is responsible for conjunctivitis, rhinitis and other respiratory problems in cats and has zoonotic significance. A total of 24 domestic cats were screened for Chlamydophila felis infection using Biogal’s ImmunoComb^TM rapid diagnostic kits (Biogal Galed Labs., Israel) out of which, 10 (41.67%) were positive for infection. Hematological as well as serum biochemical parameters were analyzed and compared with uninfected domestic cats. Results suggest that alterations in hematobiochemical parameters should be considered before initiation of therapeutic regimen for favorable clinical outcome in Chalmydophila felis-infected domestic cats.

Abstract: HIV infected children experience a range of hematological complications including anaemia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. The objective of the study was to describe the haemoglobin levels, red cell morphology, white blood cells and platelets of Antiretroviral (ARV) naïve HIV -1 infected children.  It was a retrospective study done in the period between September and November 2008. During this period medical records of children attending the paediatric HIV comprehensive care clinic (CCC) at Kenyatta National hospital were reviewed daily.  HIV infected children were enrolled into the study if they were aged 5-144 months, and results of haematological assessment at baseline were available.  Standard tools were used to abstract pre-HAART haematological parameters as well as anthropometric measurements from individual patient medical records. By the end of the study medical records of 337 children meeting enrollment criteria were reviewed.  The median age of the children was 63 months with a male to female ratio of 1:1.  The prevalence of anemia at baseline was 35.9% with 7% having hemoglobin levels of less than 8gm/dl. Thrombocytopenia was noted in 21% of the study population and leucopenia in 10%.  WHO stage 3 and 4 was associated with a ten-fold increased likelihood of anaemia OR=10.6 (95% CI 3.6, 36.3).  Chronic malnutrition WAZ < -2SD was associated with anaemia (p=0.04) but wasting and immunologic staging were not. The study concluded that haematological abnormalities are common among HIV infected ARV naïve children and anemia was the commonest hematological abnormality with almost half of the study population having microcytic hypochromic picture of anemia.

Abstract: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted at Mathari hospital, the national referral mental hospital in Kenya. The objective was to determine how the medical personnel manage mentally ill patients in relation to the Kenya Mental Health Act of 1989. A total of seventy-nine (79) nurses, 3 medical officers, 11 registrars and 6 psychiatrists were interviewed; and 223 patients’ files reviewed. The medical personnel were interviewed using a structured questionnaire to determine their knowledge and practice regarding the Mental Health Act of 1989. Further, 223 patient’s files were studied to assess factors related to the Mental Health Act, such as properly filled admission forms, frequency of patient review and modes of admission and discharge of all the participants, ninety (90) % of the doctors and 76% of the nurses interviewed were aware of the laws regarding the management of the patients.  However only 50 % and 75 % respectively of personnel adhered to the recommended procedures. Although levels of knowledge regarding the Mental Health Act (1989) were found to be high, the practice regarding the patients’ management was unsatisfactory.  Factors that might possibly contribute to this disparity between the knowledge and practice are discussed and recommendation made.

Abstract:Theileria annulata is prevalent in tropical countries and is responsible for causing ‘Theileriosis’ in cattle and buffalo. Hyelommma species of ticks are responsible for transmission of theileriosis in cattle. The present study was carried out in order to evaluate alterations in serum biochemical parameters in theileriosis affected crossbred dairy cows of Banaskantha District of Gujarat, India. A total of 117 crossbred cows were screened out of which, 20 were positive for theileriosis and subjected to estimation of serum biochemical parameters. Results suggest significant alterations in serum biochemical parameters which should be considered for favorable clinical outcome with appropriate therapeutic management.

Abstract: In September 2012, cholera outbreak occurred in Akatsi District of Volta Region, Ghana. We investigated the outbreak to determine the cause and risk factors associated with the outbreak and recommend control measures. We conducted descriptive investigations, active case search and unmatched case control study. We defined a cholera case-patient as a person having acute watery diarrhea, with or without vomiting resident in Akatsi District between 9^th and 24^th September 2012. Stool from case-patients and water samples were taken for laboratory diagnosis. We performed univariate and bivariate analysis using Epi-Info version 7. Among the 421 cholera case-patients 52.0% were males. The mean age of the case-patients was 32.9 with range between 1-84 years. The age groups 10-19 years (19.0%) and 30-39 years (18.4%) were mostly affected by cholera. Most of the cases of cholera occurred in Wute sub-district where 93.4% of all the case-patients were resident. The Attack Rate was 3.6 per 1000 population. The Case Fatality rate was 1.2% and was higher among females (1.5%). Vibrio cholera serotype Bengal was isolated from stool and river water samples and was unrelated to food.
